Topolski, Southbank

Topolski, new to the Southbank, is a Berlin-esque style gallery/bar/restaurant situated under the Hungerford railway arch and draped in the striking works of Polish-born expressionist painter, Feliks Topolski.

The simplicity of the decor allows the artwork to be the centre of attention.
Initially it seemed quite dark, but I quickly realised that the lighting is perfect "first date" wattage, where everyone looks beautifully serene and glowing, aided in part by the weird and wonderful cocktails i'm sure.

The Gins and Vodkas are infused in-house by the lovely Jason and delights such as a Horseradish infused Vodka Bloody Mary, Earl Grey Gin (exceptionally acquired tastebuds, which I do not possess, are needed for this one) and Lemon and Ginger Vodka chased with Coke will definitely keep your tastebuds on their toes. The flavours in the latter were really well married and I found it to be particularly moreish.

A live DJ playing Mellow Monday music over the low rumble of the trains, with a black and white movie projected onto the wall, all added to the ambience and created the perfect soundtrack to what was a rather unexpected Monday evening.

(Although making you look fabulous, the mood lighting makes for some pretty dire photos unfortunately)

We sat in the bar area and tucked into meat, fish and cheese canapes from the European Tapas style menu, followed by Fish and Cheese platters. Which on first look didn't seem to be much, but were actually pretty filling between the two of us and were delicious. The Rye bread and butter served with both platters was so good I could quite happily have eaten it all night, but obviously the addition of cheeses and fish made the meal more enjoyable and the pickle was the best i've had in a long time.

They also serve breakfast, lunch, cakes and pastries during the day, which I shall be going back to try pretty soon.

There's a nice vibe to this place and I think it's a great addition to the Southbank.

Go check it out!
